Navratri is a Hindu festival held in honor of the divine feminine – Maa Durga, wherein all the nine avatars of Maa Durga are worshipped for wealth and prosperity. Navratri is celebrated 4 times a year. While the two Navratri are called Gupt Navratri, the remaining two are the major Navratri festivals. The Navratri that occurs in April also embarks on the beginning of the Hindu Nav Varsh or New Year, according to the Hindu calendar.

Painted Maa Durga Marble Moorti

On the first day of Navratri, people buy Maa Durga marble statues for their home temples. During these nine days, they worship all the nine forms of Maa Durga. These are Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidhatri.

Shailputri:

Shailputri, the first avatar of Maa Durga, worshipped on the first day, is also known as ‘The daughter of the mountain’. She has the moon, symbolizing patience and devotion.

Brahmacharini:

The second form of Maa Durga is Brahmacharini. Here, “Brahma” means “the one self–existent spirit” and “caring” means “behavior”. She is the symbol of hard austerity.

Chandraghanta:

Chandraghanta is the third avatar, where Chandra means moon and ghanta means bell. She is the goddess who inspires courage in people and is always ready for war against demons.

Kushmanda:

Kushmanda worshiped on the fourth day of Navratri, is the avatar of Goddess Parvati. She is supposed to be the one who created the universe in the flash of her smile and is believed to have bestowed siddhis and Nidhisto to her devotees.

Skandamata:

Skandamata, also known as Kartikeya is worshiped on the fifth day of Navratri. She is recognized as ‘The goddess of fire’ holding baby Skanda in her lap and sitting on a lotus flower. Thus also known as “Goddess Padmasana”.

Katyayani:

Katyayani worshiped on the sixth day of Navratri, is the symbol of shakti, anger, and ultimate victory of demons.

Kaalratri:

The meaning of Kaalratri is the “Night of Death”. She is the seventh avatar of Maa Durga. Kalaratri is the aggressive and destructive manifestation of the goddess Parvati. She is the fiercest form of the mother goddess.

Mahagauri:

Mahagauri has the power to fulfill all the desires of her devotees. She is the eighth avatar of Maa Durga. Some people worship this day as the main day of Navratri and also worship and offer prasad to girls who haven’t reached puberty, believing them as the symbol of Maa.

Siddhidhatri:

Siddhidhatri, the last avatar, ends Navratri with all the blessings of Maa Durga. She is believed to be the one side of Lord Shiva’s body, thus she is also known as Ardhanarishwar. Hindus also worship the girls as they do on the eighth day, by cleaning their feet, offering them prasad, and applying a tika.

Often housewarming celebrations, keeping the purity of this auspicious day, are performed on this day. People establish white marble Maa Durga sculptures first in their home temples for the blessings of Maa Durga.
